Outfit 39 | Sewing Project

Things are finally starting to settle a little. Don't get me wrong, I'm still thinking about wedding planning in 80% of my free time, but there's a bit more free time to be used. This is also why, the moment I saw the call for pattern-testers for the Maiden Set, I sent a message asking to participate.

There are a couple variations in this pattern, both in the top. The first is the neckline which is either curved or Queen Anne, and the other is optional boning in the bodice. Given more time (it's always about time!), I definitely would have included the boning to highlight the unique shape of the hemline.

If you had asked me before sitting down to sew what I was most excited about, I would have easily said the top. The surprise of this project was that my favorite piece turned out to be the skirt. It sewed so quickly (just about 3 hours and that's with pattern cutting) and is so flattering, thanks once again to well placed darts. It toes the line of mini skirt to the point where I still feel comfortable wearing it anywhere. I really am being serious when I say I want to make at least two more of these in solid colors, it is a staple piece.

All of that said -- the skirt in no way outshines the top, and while they are both great pieces independently, they really are something special when paired together. From a distance the illusion works, the set looks like your regular sewn-together-all-in-one-piece dress. It probably helps that I matched the plaid between the top and the skirt, and I'm just going to act like that was completely on purpose; a testament to my skill.
